Coffee Review 93 –Simon Hsieh’s Aroma Roast Coffees

From: http://www.coffeereview.com/review/proud-goat-espresso-blend/

Simon Hsieh’s Aroma Roast Coffees (The Vortecs Pro-6 user)

Proud Goat Espresso Blend

Location: Taoyuan City, Taiwan

Origin: Kenya 40%, Colombia 30%, Costa Rica 30%

Roast: Medium

Est. Price: NT $2000/16 ounces

Review Date: May 2015

Agtron: 48/60

Aroma: 9

Body: 8

Flavor: 9

Aftertaste: 8

With Milk: 9

Blind Assessment:

Evaluated as espresso. Both co-taster Ethan Hill (93) and Ken (92) remarked on the subtle, intricate layering of aroma and flavor, which for Ethan involved “lilac, lavender, blackberry … almond.” Both found mouthfeel relatively light but “satiny” (Ethan), the general structure delicate and balanced, the finish softly resonant and berry-toned. Both Ethan and Ken felt the general poise and quiet intricacy of this coffee carried persuasively into three parts milk.

Notes:

In addition to his retail roasting operation Aroma Roast Coffees, Simon Hsieh also operates Soaring Phoenix Trading, a business focused on purposed-built commercial espresso blends and high quality single-origin coffees. Who Should Drink It: A classically poised and gracefully complete espresso, free of flaw or affectation.

Simon Hsieh’s Aroma Roast Coffees

Kenya AA Top 405A Espresso

Location: Taoyuan City, Taiwan

Origin: Central Kenya.

Roast: Medium

Est. Price: NTD$ 1600 / 16 ounces

Review Date: November 2014

Agtron: 47/62

Aroma: 9

Body: 9

Flavor: 10

Aftertaste: 8

With Milk: 9

Blind Assessment:

Evaluated as espresso. Rich, deep, complexly expressed. Fresh-cut cedar, blood orange, roasted cocoa nib, lavender, musk in aroma and cup. Plush, silky mouthfeel. Cedar and lavender carry into a sweet, gently drying finish. Flavor carries impressively into three parts milk, with a crisp, lightly stated chocolate dominating and a fine finish.

Notes:

As opposed to most coffees which are carried by ship from origin to consuming country, this fine Kenya was air-lifted. Despite grower discontent and urban encroachment on prime coffee lands, Kenya continues to produce some of the world’s most elegant and distinctive coffees. AA is the highest trade of Kenya coffee based on bean size and freedom from physical imperfections. In addition to his retail roasting operation Aroma Roast Coffees, Simon Hsieh also operates Soaring Phoenix Trading(鳳展商行), a business focused on purposed-built commercial espresso blends and high quality single-origin coffees. Visit tw.myblog.yahoo.com/Grey-Zone or call 886-0983-749876 for more information.

Who Should Drink It: Shows most complexity and definition as a straight shot, but also exciting with milk. Should please aficionados and beginners alike.
